These obsessions and compulsions are intense and frequent enough to interfere significantly with daily life. While some may primarily experience obsessions or compulsions, most individuals with OCD experience a combination of both.
OCD manifests uniquely in each individual, influenced by factors such as the specific type of OCD, age, family support, additional stressors, and other co-occurring psychiatric conditions. Contrary to popular portrayals, OCD isn't just about excessive cleanliness or orderliness. It encompasses a wide range of obsessions and compulsions, often disrupting a person's life at inconvenient times and feeling almost uncontrollable.
Diagnosing OCD involves a thorough evaluation by a psychiatric practitioner. Initial treatment typically includes therapy, specifically with a therapist skilled in exposure and response prevention, which is highly effective for OCD. If symptoms are severe, medication management may also be necessary. Additionally, laboratory studies might be conducted to exclude medical causes for obsessive thinking, especially if symptoms have appeared suddenly or in certain age groups.
We consider all aspects of a patient's life and health, aiming to use minimal and effective doses of medication when necessary. Our team offers a blend of psychiatric care, therapy, life coaching, and dietetics to provide comprehensive care that addresses not just the symptoms of OCD but also its impact on overall well-being. We strive to empower our patients with the tools and support they need to manage OCD and improve their quality of life.
